St. X remains unbeaten after come from behind win over Cathedral

On a beautiful summer night at Tom Ballaban field, the undefeated St. Xavier Bombers met traditional Indianapolis power, Cathedral Fighting Irish for what proved to be another classic.  The Irish, having already traveled to Cincinnati twice as they defeated Moeller week one and lost to Elder in overtime week 2 made the track east once again.

The game started promising for the Bombers as senior, Kellen Newman returned the opening kickoff 66 yards to the Cathedral 15 yard line.  After three plays lost three yards, sophomore, Mason Rohmiller split the uprights with a 35 yard field goal and the Bombers were up three.  The Irish received the kickoff and proceeded to run three plays for a total of six yards.  The punt sailed out of bounds at the Bomber 42 yard line.  Once again the Bomber offense stalled after three plays and they were forced to punt.

On the ensuing possession, the Bomber defense was able to force a third and 16, but the Irish converted on an 88 yard strike from the talented senior quarterback, Orin Edwards to junior, Camden Jordan.  The kick was good and the Irish led 7 - 3. The Bomber offense was unable to get on track and once again was forced to punt.  Cathedral, holding onto the momentum, went back to the air on first down as Edwards, once again, connected with Jordan for 59 yards and another Irish touchdown.  The Irish converted to kick and the Bombers were down 14 - 3.

The Bomber Special Team's, which had another solid night, returned the kickoff to their own 44 yard line.  The offense stalled after 6 plays and the Bombers were forced to punt again.  With 4:36 left in the first quarter, the Bomber defense recovered from the two touchdown passes to force a fumble on the Irish 11 yard line that was recovered by Tucker Hundley.  Seizing the momentum, the Bomber offense took only two plays to score a touchdown on a nine yard scramble by senior quarterback, Matthew Rueve.  The kick was good and the Bombers closed the gap 14 - 10.  The Bomber defense, seemed to settle down and force a punt on the next Irish possession.  The Bomber offense couldn't muster any yardage and after one quarter, the Irish led 14 - 0.

The second quarter found the Irish mount an 11 play drive that ended in a 34 yard field goal increasing the Irish lead to seven points.  Kellen Newman returned the kickoff to the Irish 40 yard line, once again giving the Bomber offense tremendous field position.  On the fourth play of the possession, Rueve found Clifford for a 36 yard touchdown strike.  The extra point tied the game at 17 a piece.  The Irish counter punched on the next possession as junior running back, Daylen Hall scampered 57 yards for another Irish touchdown.  After the kick the Irish, once again, had the lead, 24 - 7.  The Bomber offense stalled on the next possession as they went for it on fourth and three only to be denied by the Irish defense.  With 3:05 left in the half, the Irish drove the ball to the Bomber 6 yard line but with only :47 left in the half an errant pass by Edwards was intercepted by senior, Drew Klas.  At the end of the half, the Bombers were down 24 - 17.

The Irish received the second half kick off and promptly added another seven points on a 54 yard quarterback keeper in which Edwards was untouched.  The kick was good and the Bombers quickly found themselves down 14.  The Bomber offense counter punched on the next possession as Rueve, once again, found Clifford on a 44 yard touchdown pass.  The extra point was good and the Irish lead was cut to seven.  The Bomber defense bounced back and forced a quick three and out of which the Bomber offense took full advantage.  Starting the drive on their own 38 yard line, Rueve engineered a six play drive that ended with Newman scoring on a 10 yard run.  After the extra point, the game was tied at 31.

The Bomber defense, having found new life, forced another quick punt.  The punt return, looking for a block for the fourth week in a row, forced an eight yard punt that landed at the Cathedral 43 yard line.  The Bomber offense stalled on the Irish nine yard line where Rohmiller converted on 26 yard field goal.  At the start of the 4th quarter, the Bombers regained the lead 34 - 31.

The Bomber defense continued to build on the momentum when they forced another Irish punt that was blocked for the fourth week in a row by Hundley.  The Bomber offense, starting with the ball on their own 35 yard line drove to the Irish 19 yard line.  On fourth and nine Rueve connected with junior, Andrew Britt for a beautiful back shoulder fade that resulted in a 19 yard touchdown.  The extra point was solid and the Bomber's led 41 - 31.

The Irish offense took the next possession and methodically marched down to the Bomber 18 yard line.  On second and one, Edwards was sacked by senior, T.J. O'Malley for a six yard loss.  Once again, on third and seven, Edwards was sacked by senior, Eric Thompson for a two yard loss.  Finally, on fourth and nine, O'malley and senior, Noah Taylor combined for yet another sack and the Bomber offense took over with 3:29 left in the game.

The Irish offense took over with 1:29 left in the game down by ten points.  They were able to mount a drive deep into Bomber territory, and with no time left on the clock, Edwards heaved a deep fade route into the corner of the endzone for Camden Jordan.  Jordan made a beautiful leaping reception for a touchdown that closed the score at 41 - 37.

The game ended an instant classic.  Although the Irish outgained the Bombers 589 (258 of which came on four long touchdown plays) to 319, the Bomber starting field position was the Cathedral 47 yard line as compared to the Cathedral starting field position on their own 22.  Although they have a lot to improve upon over the next few weeks, the Bombers remain undefeated at four wins and zero losses heading into GCL week against the Moeller Crusaders!
