A tough challenge awaits the top-seeded St. Xavier Bombers on Wednesday night as the Greater Miami Conference champion Mason Comets travel to RDI Stadium for the OHSAA Division I, Region 4 semifinals.
The Bombers enter the match up riding a wave of dominant postseason performances. St. Xavier opened tournament play by dismantling Little Miami 22-2, followed by a convincing 19-4 victory over Lakota West in the regional quarterfinals. In the win over Lakota West, the Bombers' high-octane offense built an insurmountable 18-2 lead by halftime, signaling that the attack is firing on all cylinders at the most critical juncture of the season.
Mason counters with a historic tier of local dominance, having completely steamrolled through its league schedule to capture the Greater Miami Conference title. The Comets finished a flawless 10-0 in conference play, outscoring GMC opponents by a staggering 141-44 margin. That defensive ruthlessness and efficient execution carried right into the postseason, where Mason opened with a 17-4 blowout of Lakota East before securing its regional semifinal berth.
To secure a victory over a disciplined Mason squad, St. Xavier must maintain control of the game's tempo. The Comets enter the contest with a 13-5 overall record after navigating the GMC with a perfect 10-0 conference mark. Mason advanced to the semifinals after edge-of-the-seat postseason victories, including a 17-13 win over Milford followed by a tight 15-15 battle that required extra possession management to survive.
St. Xavier already holds a victory over the Comets this season, having traveled to Mason on March 25 and returning with a hard-fought 12-7 win. Repeating that success will require the Bombers to effectively manage transition play and handle Mason's defensive adjustments. The Comets have evolved significantly since early spring, making defensive slide packages and possession retention critical points of emphasis for the St. Xavier coaching staff.
The match up will showcase some of the premier lacrosse talent in Ohio. The Bombers must account for Mason's dynamic senior midfield duo of Jacob Lupinski and Tyler Lupinski, both of whom are Robert Morris University commits capable of generating quick transition goals. For St. Xavier, slowing down the Lupinski brothers at the face off, X, and limiting their clean looks in settled sets will be the primary defensive objective.
The winner of Wednesday's semifinal will advance to the regional finals on Friday, May 29. Awaiting the victor will be the winner of the parallel regional semifinal match up between Archbishop Moeller and Milford.
